Welcome to the Exhibit Commons:
a place where people from widely ranging backgrounds and in distant
locations will be able to share outlooks and experiences by altering
digital files that operate museum exhibits or other exhibit content.

This will create a wholly new kind of institution
where some of the exhibits reflect the institution’s perspective,
while others offer differing points of view, created through the
communal creativity unleashed by digital technology including computing
and networking.
By stepping back from complete control of how ideas are expressed
through exhibits, we hope to foster a whole new kind of museum environment
that relies on a broad sense of inclusiveness.
The first set of Exhibit Commons experiences is being planned for
Liberty Science Center, located
in Jersey City, NJ, just across the Hudson River from lower Manhattan.
Liberty Science Center is the first to begin offering this kind
of access to others outside the institution, and in time we hope
other museums will similarly offer some of the exhibit design “reins”
to those outside the field, making those experiences available through
this site as well.
To facilitate access to people from as many backgrounds as possible,
the first group of exhibits to be entered into the Exhibit Commons
are ones for which the public need not provide any hardware or physical
material but will use programming, videography and/or other forms
of personal creative work to make submissions.
We encourage you to keep tabs on this concept as it develops from
an idea to a profound reality, and as we get new material up on
this site, be ready to contribute!
